Environmental Systems Project is an idea that developed over time after moving to Hawai'i. I decided to provide a service for owner builders of residences. This was pre-Hurricane Iniki, a natural disaster that devastated Kaua'i and resulted in a change of the requirements for building construction in the state. Ironically the changes were exactly the details that I insisted on including in the construction of the buildings that I helped to plan. The changes were not accepted without considerable resistance, first from the owners and then from the contractors. I tell you this to avoid any misconception of the expertise that this service brings to your project.

As principal project manager, I have worked throughout the Western US after studying at the University of Oklahoma School of Architecture. This curriculum was engineering based. The emphasis of building planning has changed over time. We have learned that the design emphasis needs to be modified by concerns for environmental relevance.

I will say only one thing more. The work done under the name of Environmental Systems Project remains a significant part of the Big Island. The following is the rationale for the B.A. in Liberal Studies: A program and curriculum that was developed for what is entitled: Urban Environmentalism.

The city is one of the basic criteria of civilized man. As the culture of man has evolved the form of the city has changed little. This lack of change is the prime factor in a carcinogenic pattern of growth which has virtually dehumanized the urban environment. The energy losses due to inefficient application of a proliferating technology indicate that modification of the present conceptualization and perception of urban realities and the bio-anthropological relationship is of immediate priority.
